Christopher Mann, guitarist

HyeKyung Lee                    A-ri-a-rang for string orchestra
(world premiere of string orchestra version,
                                  arranged for MCOSJ)
Castelnuovo-Tedesco         Guitar Concerto no. 1
              Christopher Mann, guitarist
Ludwig van Beethoven       Symphony no. 3, op. 55, “Eroica”

Points of interest:

Beethoven originally planned his third symphony as an homage to Napoleon when he thought Napoleon was a champion of equality and individual freedom.

The famous violinist Jascha Heifetz assisted Castelnuovo-Tedeso in obtaining a contract to compose film music for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer after he fled anti-Semitism in his native Italy.

Composer HyeKyung Lee’s style has been described as “virtuosic fantasy where continuous rhythmic motion smoothly joined contrasting moods and effectively propelled from one section to another.”

Points of interest:

Felix Mendelssohn was greatly interested in the music of Bach, and he was important for keeping alive the music of Bach, Handel, and Schubert by conducting works of these composers.

Noted composer Henry Mollicone was commissioned by Brian Holmes, another noted composer, to write the horn concerto to be premiered at this concert.

California’s recent wildfires made such an impression on Leslie LaBarre, she wrote a movement about them in her California Suite.
