Le Petit Trianon - 72 N. 5th Street, San Jose - 350 tickets available
Mozart's Passion
Keith Kirchoff, Pianist
Benjamin Britten, Simple Symphony
with Evergreen Valley High School Chamber Orchestra
Sergei Taneyev, Andante
Nancy Bloomer Deussen, Central Coast Concerto (world premiere)
Henryk Górecki, Concerto for Piano and Strings
W. A. Mozart , Symphony no. 40 in G minor, K. 550
Symphonies serve as bookends for this concert. Our starting point, Britten’s symphony, is modern and half as long as Mozart’s. Both are favorites, but in its time Mozart’s was revolutionary, full of passion rather than refined elegance. Bloomer Deussen gives us a premiere, a Neo-romantic snapshot of California towns. Taneyev’s and Górecki’s pieces provide lyrical and harmonic contrasts.
Although you’ll find pianist and composer Keith Kirchoff at festivals and in concert halls around the world, he’s also likely to pop up in clubs like The Stone, a new music venue in New York City. Kirchoff focuses on unusual, neglected, and new work, and he has premiered about 100 new works. His advocacy of new music charges his performances of the repertoire he plays from the 18th century to the present.
The Box Office opens at 6:30pm. We accept only cash and checks at the door.
Concerts are supported, in part, by a Cultural Affairs grant from the City of San José, a grant from the Farrington Historical Foundation, and by a grant from Arts Council Silicon Valley, in partnership with the County of Santa Clara and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Passions in Contrast
Pip Clarke, Violinist
Gioacchino Rossini String Sonata no. 1
with Piedmont Hills High School Chamber Orchestra
John Beeman Serendipity
F.J. Haydn Symphony no. 94 in G major, "Surprise"
P. Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, op. 35
This is a concert of contrasts. Few works can claim the popularity of Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s Concerto. They are long-lived “favorites,” but one is wittily Classical, while the other is passionately Romantic. MCO premiered John Beeman’s Serendipity in May, 2010 at a composer’s concert in Palo Alto. Its dance-like rhythms and accessible tonalities suggest that this piece will be a future “favorite.”
Pip Clarke first performed with us in 2001, long before her sold-out debut at Carnegie Hall. She returns for her eighth appearance. British-born, Clarke makes the U.S. her home, and she has performed internationally with 70 orchestras. In recent years, she has toured across the U.S., Canada and the U.K. She was also the featured violin soloist for the soundtrack of 15 Minutes (with Robert De Niro and Edward Burns). Among the conductors who have sought her out are Keith Lockhart and Marin Alsop.
The Box Office opens at 6:30pm. We accept only cash and checks at the door.

Latin Passions - for Valentine's Day
Dan Levitan, Harpist
José Pablo Moncayo Huapango
Joaquin Turina La Oración del Torero
with Monta Vista High School Chamber Orchestra
Joaquin Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez
Nancy Bloomer Deussen Tico
Manuel Ponce Estrellita
Miguel del Aguila Salón Buenos Aires (west coast premiere)
Much music from Spain and Latin America evokes passion, and audiences appreciate our scheduling this concert around Valentine’s Day.
This year’s program includes favorites with some twists. For instance, Turina’s piece — a bullfighter’s prayer — was originally written for string quartet — but we’ll do the orchestra version. Rodrigo wrote his Concierto for guitar, but our soloist will perform the composer’s transcription for harp. Salon Buenos Aires has become so popular that Aguila has written several arrangements of it. MCO is pleased to present the West Coast premiere of the chamber orchestra variant.
Bay Area audiences are sure to recognize harpist Dan Levitan. He’s the principal harpist for four Bay Area orchestras. He has also performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet.
The Box Office opens at 6:30pm. We accept only cash and checks at the door.

Passionate Finale
Karen Kevra, Flutist
R. Schumann Overture, Scherzo, and Finale, op. 52
Eric Ewazen Concerto for Flute and Chamber Orchestra
L. Van Beethoven Symphony no. 7 in A, op. 92
We end the series with works from two giants in the musical pantheon and a pause for a new work. Music lovers — including the pop star Sting — have celebrated the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann’s birth in 1810.
This tonal piece has four movements that are colorful vignettes, each with a distinctive mood and theme. What music Beethoven packs into his Seventh Symphony! This is a festive work, even in the stately slow movement. Beethoven takes a simple rhythm and puts a melody over it; this movement is singable. So we’ll go out singing!
Karen Kevra has developed a reputation for her distinctive warm and extroverted performances as a soloist and chamber musician. Kevra is also committed to expanding the modern flute repertoire, so she is a particularly appropriate soloist for Ewazen’s work.
The Box Office opens at 6:30pm. We accept only cash and checks at the door.
